御堂筋より西側の道頓堀川沿い。
西の端は大正タグボートあたりまでです。

大阪のシンボルストリート御堂筋と道頓堀川が交差するあたりの川沿い西側エリアです。川の南が「道頓堀商店街」、北は「久左衛門商店街」と言います。どちらも歴史のある商業エリアです。少し前は、大人の街のイメージが強かった地域ですが、最近は様々なジャンルの飲食店が集まり老若男女、カップルからグループ、家族連れまで楽しめる街になりました。大小様々なホテルも多くあり、エリア内の客室は3000室を超えます。そのため国内外からの観光客も多く世界中の人々で賑わっています。

This is the west side area along the river around the intersection of Midosuji, the symbolic street of Osaka, and the Dotonbori River. South of the river is called “Dotonbori Shopping Street” and north is called “Kyuzaemon Shopping Street”. Both are commercial areas with a long history. Not long ago, the area had a strong image as a town for adults, but recently it has become a town where restaurants of various genres have gathered and can be enjoyed by men and women of all ages, couples, groups, and families. There are also many hotels of various sizes, with over 3,000 rooms in the area. The area is therefore crowded with tourists from home and abroad, and people from all over the world.

古くからエンタメの街として栄えました。明治以前から芝居小屋が建ち並び歌舞伎が中心でした。またお店だけでなく、出世地蔵尊という名のお地蔵様が隠れた名所として知られています。出世や栄達に御利益があると評判です。そんな街で1924年「大阪ジャズ」が道頓堀から始まります。日本ジャズは100周年を迎えました。私たちはジャズと川をテーマに大阪の音風景を知っていただきたく、日本ジャズ発祥の地トンボリウエストで様々な企画とマップ作りで盛り上げていきます！皆さんが楽しんでいただけるよう、街の人々とともにお迎えします。

It is a cheerful and fun town.

It has long flourished as a town of entertainment. Theaters have lined the streets since before the Meiji era (1868-1912), and Kabuki has been a mainstay of the area. In addition to the stores, Jizo Son, a Jizo statue, is known as a hidden place of interest. It is reputed to bring good fortune for success and prosperity. In such a town, “Osaka Jazz” started in Dotonbori in 1924. Jazz in Japan celebrated its 100th anniversary. We want people to know the soundscape of Osaka with the theme of jazz and the river, and we will enliven it with various projects and map-making in Tombori West, the birthplace of Japanese jazz! We welcome you together with the people of the city for your enjoyment.

トンボリウエストの始まりは、
400年以上前！

この地区はかって九郎右衛門町といわれる昔ながらの花街で、江戸から下ってきた塩屋九郎右衛門が開発を担い、道頓堀九郎右衛門町という名前になりました。そして塩屋九郎右衛門は芝居小屋を建てました。成安道頓（なるやすどうとん）らが慶長17年に掘削を開始した道頓堀は、工事の途中で豊臣が滅ぼされるという出来事もありましたが、三年後に完成するとその側に芝居小屋がいくつも建ち始めました。そこで幕府は歌舞伎の興行権を許可制にしました。この興行権を所有する者の事を上方では名代（なだい）と言います。九郎右衛門は興行許可を願い出、名代となります。名代は道頓堀の地に定着しており有名な劇場数に対応して設定されたそうです。エンターテイメントシティーの原点です。

How did Tombori West begin?
more than 400 years ago!

This area was once known as Kuroemon-cho, a traditional flower town, and Shioya Kuroemon, who came down from Edo, was responsible for the development of the area, which became known as Dotonbori Kuroemon-cho. Shioya Kuroemon then built a playhouse. Naruyasu Doton and others began excavating Dotonbori in Keicho 17, and although Toyotomi was destroyed during the construction, when it was completed three years later, a number of playhouses began to be built along its side. The Shogunate then granted the right to perform Kabuki to the public by permission. In Kamigata, the person who owned the rights to perform was called a nadai (master). Kuroemon requested permission to perform and became a nadai. Meidai were established in Dotonbori and were set up in response to the number of famous theaters in the area. This is the origin of Entertainment City.

御堂筋の完成と九郎右衛門町

御堂筋は江戸時代に作られた幅員6ｍの通りでした。昭和初期に受益者負担による延長約4.4㎞、幅員44ｍ、銀杏並木や地下鉄の建設など画期的な規模で近代都市の基礎を形づくる大阪のシンボルストリートとして昭和12年（1937年）に完成しました。残念ながら御堂筋の完成により、道頓堀ウエスト地区は御堂筋（幅員44ｍ）を挟んで、いわゆる道頓堀地区とは違って九右衛門町通りは昔の道頓堀の風情を残す通りとなり、今日も人情があふれる街として人々が行きかっています。

Completion of Midosuji Boulevard and Kuroemon-cho

Midosuji was a 6-meter-wide street built in the Edo period. It was completed in 1937 as Osaka’s symbolic street that formed the foundation of the modern city on an epoch-making scale with the construction of a 4.4-kilometer-long, 44-meter-wide, gingko-lined avenue and a subway line in the early Showa period (1937-1989), paid for by the beneficiaries. Unfortunately, with the completion of Midosuji Avenue, the Dotonbori West area was separated from the so-called Dotonbori area by Midosuji Avenue (44 m wide), and Kuemoncho Street became a street that retains the atmosphere of the old Dotonbori, where people still come and go as a street full of humanity today.

道頓堀ジャズの始まり

1912年（明治45年）ごろ横浜に、アメリカのサンフランシスコから出航する太平洋航路の客船で船のバンドとして、働いていた東洋音楽学校の学生たちによりジャズという新しいアメリカ文化がもたらされ、日本でのジャズが始まりました。しかし1923年9月1日に発生した関東大震災によって神奈川県を中心とする東京をはじめ南関東地区では震度7の激震に見舞われ壊滅状態となりました。一方道頓堀では、震災の直接的な被害はなくダンスの伴奏音楽としてジャズの人気が高まっていました。道頓堀橋北詰にあった「カフェパウリスタ」「ユニオン」などがダンスホールとして開業し、ジャズのバンドを雇い入れていました。そこへ震災で被災した多くのミュージシャンが道頓堀に集まり、ジャズバンドで仕事を始めました。これが日本の商業音楽の原点となりました。

The Beginning of Dotonbori Jazz

Around 1912, students of the Toyo School of Music, who were working as a band on a cruise ship sailing from San Francisco to the Pacific Ocean, introduced a new American culture called jazz to Yokohama, and jazz in Japan began. However, the Great Kanto Earthquake of September 1, 1923, devastated the southern Kanto region, including Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture, with a tremor of magnitude 7. On the other hand, Dotonbori was not directly affected by the earthquake, and jazz music was gaining popularity as an accompaniment to dance. Café Paulista” and ‘Union,’ both located on the north side of the Dotonbori Bridge, opened as dance halls and hired jazz bands. There, many musicians affected by the earthquake gathered in Dotonbori and started working in jazz bands. This was the origin of commercial music in Japan.

ジャズボート

ジャズボートは道頓堀を行く観光船として道頓堀で生まれたジャズの原点を継承し保存することで多くの方にジャズを楽しんでいただき、音の風景の創出をめざしてスタートしました。近年のインバウンドブームとも相まって、今や人気のコンテンツと成長しております。船着き場もトンボリウエストに移動しました。川から大阪の観光名所であるグリコの大看板やリバーウォークを行き来する多くの観光客とのコミュニケーション図りながら、日本で唯一、道頓堀で生まれたトラディショナルジャズ演奏が楽しめます。所要時間は一回40分。船着場の場所は地図でご確認ください。

Jazz Boat

Jazz City Osaka is an initiative of the Secretariat and the General Association for Osaka Revitalisation Projects Executive Committee to strengthen the entertainment offerings of Osaka, with the aim of creating a jazz-infused Osaka.
The Jazz Boat was started as a sightseeing boat that goes to Dotonbori with the aim of creating a soundscape of jazz for many people to enjoy by inheriting and preserving the origin of jazz music that was born in Dotonbori. In combination with the recent inbound boom, it has now grown to become a popular content. The boat landing has also been moved to Tombori West. While communicating with the many tourists who come and go along the River Walk and the large Glico signboard, one of Osaka’s tourist attractions, you can enjoy a traditional jazz performance, the only one of its kind in Japan, which was born in Dotonbori.
